In this project, I collaborated with a team of three and the maintenance crew at Windward to engineer innovative, accessible, and yet concealed trash bins that would attach onto the bottom of tables, further reducing the amount of litter around Foley Field.
My group and I wanted to address the problem of food and trash being left on the tables at Windward. We ate at Foley Field every day, and noticed that most everyone else would not throw away their wrappers, plates, bottles, etc. at the end of lunch. As a result, the “Alpha” crew’s job at Windward became unnecessarily harder, as the workers then had to clean up after the students. In order to help mitigate this problem, we constructed trash bins that would attach onto each table at the field. With trash bins being closer and more accessible, students would be more inclined to throw away their trash, as they would not have to walk such a "far" distance. We relied upon the CREATE Studio and McMaster Carr for our materials. Ensuring that the trash cans were concealed as to reduce smell and obstruction was important to our design, so we adopted a drawer-style mechanism. Lastly, to attach the bins onto the tables, we implemented strong suction cups so that the contraption could eventually be replaced. Overall, we received positive feedback and hope to continue reducing litter around campus. |
